Georg Helm

Ferdinand Georg Helm ( born March 15, 1851 in Dresden, † September 13, 1923 ) was a German mathematician.

Life

Helm put 1867 his leaving certificate at the school from Anne. He then studied at the Polytechnic School in Dresden mathematics and science and from 1871 to 1873 at the University of Leipzig ( Carl Gottfried Neumann ) and Berlin.

Helmet taught from 1888 to 1922 Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the Technical University (or at the Polytechnic Dresden), from 1892 as a full professor. From 1906 he was Professor of Applied Mathematics. At times, he was rector of the Technical University Dresden. He worked in an interdisciplinary, to his teaching was, for example, an insurance seminar. Helmet coined the term " mathematical chemistry."

Helm was a representative of the energetics of Wilhelm Ostwald and delivered himself as his representative in 1896, meeting of natural scientists in Lübeck, a scientific examination of Ludwig Boltzmann, who was the representative of atomism opposed the views of Ostwald. Boltzmann remained in this dispute " winner ".

In the field of economics postulated Georg helmet that money is the economic equivalent of low entropy is ( doctrine of energy, 1887).

George Helm was in the family grave helmet / Zeuner - including here Gustav Zeuner buried - buried. His grave is located on the Old Anne Cemetery in Dresden eV and is supervised by the Association for the Promotion of students from the Technical University of Dresden. In addition, his commemorated today in the memorial of professors of TU Dresden in the same cemetery.
