Georg Matthias Monn

Matthias Georg Monn (including man) ( born April 9, 1717 Vienna, † October 3, 1750 ) was an Austrian composer, organist and music teacher of the Viennese Pre-Classical.

Life

About the composer, who died at the age of 33 years on " lung failure ", one knows very little. Documents are only positions as organist, first in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. In addition, he served in the same function in Lower Austria Melk and later at the St. Charles Church in Vienna's Wieden. He is said to have been ailing all his life and always have been dressed in black.

However, his works show him as an ingenious masterpiece, especially in the field of instrumental music. His works were mainly in the last decade. You are an Austrian counterpart to the experiments of the Mannheim School, which began to develop at the same time on the Rhine. Monn was in his concertos, sonatas and symphonies clearly under the influence of the latest developments from Italy. He spoke a language that was directly linked to the Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

From late Baroque to Classical

Monn represented together with Georg Christoph Wagenseil and other contemporaries such as Leopold Mozart and Josef Starzer those Austrian composers

  • The one hand, yet the counterpoint on principles of JS Bach and Fux had been represented, anwandten,
  • Other hand, the transition from become strict and bombastic late Baroque to the freer, more graceful " style galant " helped to break through.
  • The former two also discussed the renewal of the sonata form by extensions whose second theme and the so-called implementation. Later led Michael and Joseph Haydn in particular those characteristics to the championship.

Matthias Moon's compositional output mainly includes 16 symphonies, a number of quartets, sonatas, masses and compositions for violin and piano. He is one of the still well-known representatives of the Viennese Pre-Classical.

His authorship of the works attributed to him most, however, is questionable in so far as they are received almost all only in copies from the 1780s, and therefore also by his brother Johann Christoph Monn (1726? -1782 ) Could come. To this day, is not even clear whether it is the 1717 -born " Johann Georg man " actually is organist Matthias Georg Monn those who died in 1750. The Moon's image as a pioneer of pre-classical symphony is therefore largely a construct of the Viennese musical science of the early 20th century and has long been a need for thorough re-evaluation.

Today's reception

The substance of the still clearly baroque spirit breathing Cello Concerto in G Minor Georg Matthias Monn organist of Vienna ( 1717-1750 ) holds the thoughtful scrutiny of musicians. (Note: Freiburg Baroque Orchestra). Loving like an old master watchmaker dab the strings even in the middle movement - a Siciliano of a tart simple beauty - the solo game with the simple tool members Descending chord interjections from.

... The fact that in one of the Symphony in G ( 1749) Moon's in the history of the symphony a kind of second theme (page theme) presents a very early age, which is so important for the final formation of the so-called sonata form, subsequently, is less known. Early (1740 ) Monn has used the third three-movement symphony type a minuet.
