George A. Simmons

George Abel Simmons ( born September 8, 1791 in Lyme, Grafton County, New Hampshire, † October 27, 1857 in Keeseville, New York ) was an American politician.

Career

George Simmons attended the district school. He graduated in 1816 at Dartmouth College in Hanover. Then he moved to Lansingburgh (New York), where he worked as a principal at the local academy. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Keeseville.

Simmons was 1840-1842 member of the New York State Assembly. He took 1846 as a delegate part in the Constitutional Convention of New York. Simmons was elected as a Whig in the 33rd U.S. Congress and re-elected as a candidate of the opposition party in the 34th Congress. He was there in the U.S. House of Representatives act of March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1857. During this time, he had presided over the Judiciary Committee ( 34th Congress ). Simmons decided in 1856 not to stand for re-election, and returned to the end of his second term to his work as a lawyer in Keeseville, where he died in 1857 and was buried there in the Evergreen Cemetery.
