George Abraham Grierson

George Abraham Grierson ( born January 7, 1851 Glenageary, Ireland, † March 9, 1941, Camberley, UK ) was a British orientalist and linguist.

Biography

Grierson was born into an established family of printers in Dublin. He attended St. Bees School in Cumberland, and Trinity College in Dublin. Grierson studied philosophy, law and literature and a doctorate in each of the disciplines.

In 1871 he joined the Indian Civil Service. In 1873 he took over political tasks in Bengal and was later magistrate in Patna, and later opium Agent for Bihar. In 1898 he was appointed Superintendent of the newly established Linguistic Survey of India in 1900 and moved to England to consult there European scholars and libraries.

Grierson gained high reputation because of his linguistic studies and publications on the languages ​​of South Asia.

In 1905, Grierson sat at a meeting of the Royal Asiatic Society successfully supported the establishment of a Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​, History and Archaeology at the University of London, after a previous attempt failed in 1898 by the Society. On November 13, 1905 from the University adopted a resolution which recommended the establishment of the School of Oriental Studies. Grierson was from 1917-25 Governor of the school.

Grierson published in 1933 the last time. His wife, with whom he was in 1880, survived him only for a short time. She died on 19 February 1943.

Awards

Grierson was appointed in 1928 in the British Order of Merit. Grierson has also been knighted ( Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire ( KCIE ) ).
