George Auriol

George Auriol, actually Jean -Georges Huyot ( born April 26, 1863 in Beauvais (Oise ); † February 3, 1938 in Paris) was a French poet, song writer, graphic designer and artist of the Art Nouveau.

Life and work

Auriol came to Paris in 1883 and was admitted to the typography and book design by Eugène Grasset. From 1885 he worked for the editor of the satirical magazine Chat noir and composed way Chansons ( The most famous was the romance " Quand les lilas refleuriront "). Auriol worked as an illustrator for publishers Larousse and Hachette ) but was also interested in historical fonts and created his own Auriol in the spirit of Art Nouveau. Auriol, a bohemian, was friends with Erik Satie.

Auriol created playbills for André Antoine's Théâtre Libre and for the Théâtre du Chat Noir in Montmartre ().
