George Barbier

George Barbier ( born October 10, 1882 in Nantes, † March 16, 1932 in Paris) was a French painter, illustrator and designer of Art Deco.

Life and work

Little is known about the life of George Barber. Although barber who had studied nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris at the École, had held in 1910 for the first time a vernissage at the Salon des Humoristes under the pseudonym Édouard William, it was not until the following year, while a further exhibition in the gallery Boutet de Monvel discovered. From 1912 until his death turned barber at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.

He worked for famous magazines of the time such as Le Rire, La Gazette du bon ton (founded 1912) and the Journal des Dames et des Modes ( also founded in 1912 ), where he was responsible not only the drawings, but they also commented. His stage costumes for the Ballets Russes became known. In addition, he also designed bookplates and illustrated books and catalogs from Charles Baudelaire to Paul Verlaine. It is connected with the fashion houses of Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin, Jeanne Paquin, Madeleine Vionnet, but also with the jeweler Cartier.

George Barbier designed numerous decorations and costumes for the theater and cinema. He died in 1932 at the height of his career in Paris.
