George Dance the Elder

George Dance the Elder ( * 1695 in the UK, † February 8, 1768 in London) was a British architect and surveyor.

Dance came in 1735 to London. His first larger work was the establishment of the Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London. His design in the Palladian style sat down in the tender against those of James Gibbs and Giacomo Leoni by. His other works include a number of churches in London, including St Botolph's Aldgate ( 1741-44 ), the St. Mattew 's Church, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch the Church. He also built many public buildings and churches throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. So he designed among other things, the 1859 demolished the city hall of Coleraine in Northern Ireland.

Dance had five sons, of whom three also gained high reputation. The eldest son James Dance was known as an actor at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The third son Nathaniel Dance -Holland was a portrait painter and politician. The fifth son of George Dance the Younger as the architect also gained notoriety.

Dances grave was originally located in the sacristy of the church of St Luke Old Street and was later transferred to the cemetery of the church.
