George Gibbs (special effects artist)

George Gibbs is a VFX supervisor of an Oscar in the category Best received visual effects with both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as well as Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Life

At the age of 16 he began working in East London as a theater electrician at the theater The Hackney Empire. At age 21, he got a job at Pinewood Film Studios, where he was involved in several films in smaller special effects. From 1964 he worked for Gerry Anderson as special effects assistant at the puppet series Thunderbirds. As a VFX supervisor for the first time, he worked for Captain Nemo, followed by films such as A Bridge Too Far, Flash Gordon and Conan the Barbarian.

In 1985 he was awarded for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom together with Dennis Muren, Michael J. McAlister and Lorne Peterson his first Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. A second Oscar in the same category he won in 1989 for Who Framed Roger Rabbit along with Ken Ralston, Richard Williams and Ed Jones. He received a third nomination in 1993 for Alien 3, the price received this year, however, Death Becomes Her.
