George Maxwell (administrator)

Sir ( William) George Maxwell KBE, CMG ( born June 9, 1871 in Malacca; † August 22, 1959 in Shoreham, Sussex, England ) was a British colonial administrator in British Malaya and the Straits Settlements. George Maxwell was the eldest son of William Edward Maxwell, who held the position of High Commissioner in Malaya and Governor of the Straits Settlements.

Life

William George Maxwell was born on June 9, 1871, the eldest of six sons of Governor William Edward Maxwell and Lillias Grant, born Aberigh - Mackay; probably in Malacca. At the age of 11 years to him the medal of the Royal Humane Society was awarded when he saved a drowning animal from the port of Guernsey. From 1885 to 1890 he studied at Clifton College in Bristol.

George Maxwell joined in 1891 as a junior official in the service of the Government of Perak. He rose to Assistant District Magistrate and Registrar of Courts in Kinta Valley in Perak on. He was also Assistant Secretary of the Government of Perak, tax official in Larut [note 1], land registry officer [note 2] and Chief of the Mines Inspectorate [note 3] in Nordperak and acting head of administration [note 4] for Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Perak.

On August 23, 1902, he married ( Florence ) Evelyn Stevenson; the couple had two sons.

In 1904 he was transferred as an administrative official in the Straits Settlements and were the reigning arbiter on the Court of Requests in Singapore. [Note 5]

Part-time studies in law and various post as Magistrate in Malaya opened him the way to his admission to the bar in 1906. During the same year he received the post of district officer of Dinding, today Pulau Pangkor and Solicitor General for Thailand. On July 9, 1909 Kedah was. Due to the ratified by the United Kingdom and Thailand Anglo - Siamese Treaty of 1909 part of the British Empire Maxwell was appointed as British adviser to Kedah (British Adviser for Kedah ) and has held this office from 1909 to 1915 and a second time by 1918 until 1919. George Maxwell died on August 22, 1959 of heart failure at Southlands Hospital, Shoreham, Sussex.

Life's work and honors

On November 29, 1929 Maxwell opened the Sultan Idris Training College in Perak and made it the highest educational institution of that time, which was reserved exclusively for Malays. On his commitment to the education of the Malays still reminds named after him SMK Maxwell ( Abbr ( Malaysian ) for Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Maxwell; German: Maxwell School ) in Kuala Lumpur and the " Maxwell Hill " in Taiping. In 1924 he was admitted as a Knight Commander in the Order of the British Empire and was allowed henceforth use the title "Sir".
