George Osborne, 8th Duke of Leeds

George Godolphin Osborne, 8th Duke of Leeds (* July 16, 1802 in Gogmagog Hills, Cambridgeshire, England; † August 8, 1872 ) was a British aristocrat (peer ) during the reign of George III, George IV and William. IV

George Osborne was the eldest son of Francis Godolphin Osborne, 1st Baron Godolphin ( 1777-1850 ) and Elizabeth Charlotte Eden ( 1780-1847 ), a daughter of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland. Osborne had an older sister, Charlotte († 1838), and three younger brothers, William ( 1804-1888 ), Sydney ( 1808-1889 ) and D' Arcy ( 1814-1846 ). His uncle was George Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds, and his grandfather Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds.

Osborne married in 1824 in the British Embassy in Paris Lady Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart, who was an illegitimate daughter of the British statesman and diplomat Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Granville and Henrietta Frances Spencer, and therefore maternal half-sister of the writer Caroline Lamb. They had eight children: George (1828-1895), Francis George (1830-1907), Susan Georgina (1830-1903), D' Arcy (1834-1895), William (1835-1888), Emma Charlotte ( 1837 - 1906), Charlotte ( 1838-1914 ) and Blanche ( 1842-1917 ).

His father Francis was ennobled in 1832 as Baron Godolphin, so that Osborne was allowed to precede his name for Hon The Hon. After the death of his father in 1850 he inherited the title. 1852 his wife died, Harriet. In 1859 he inherited from his cousin Francis D' Arcy- Osborne, 7th Duke of Leeds the title of the Duke of Leeds, as this had no male offspring. George Godolphin Osborne died in 1872 at the age of 70 years Gogmagog Hills, Cambridgeshire. His eldest son, George Godolphin Osborne succeeded him as 9th Duke of Leeds.
