Duke of Leeds

Duke of Leeds was a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which was worn by the family Osborne. The title was derived from the city of Leeds in Yorkshire, not from Leeds Castle in Kent.

The old headquarters was initially Hornby Castle in Yorkshire, then Ashridge Park, owned by the National Trust today. In addition, since 1766 belonged to the Dukes the Godolphin House, home of the Godolphin family in the county of Cornwall, as had married Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds, a daughter of Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin, and this had no male heir. Since then led the Dukes usually this addition in their family name.

Award

The first award was presented in 1694 to Thomas Osborne, 1st Marquess of Carmarthen.Dieser held various high offices of state in the second half of the 17th century. The title became extinct in 1964 with the death of the last Duke of Leeds.

Subordinate title

The Dukes of Leeds also held the title Marquess of Carmarthen ( created 1689), Earl of Danby, in the County of York ( created 1674), Viscount Latimer, of Danby in the County of York ( created in 1673 ), Viscount Osborne of Dunblane ( created 1673 ) and Baron Osborne of Kiveton in the County of York ( created in 1673 ). All titles were in the Peerage of England, excluding the Viscounty Osborne, who belonged to the Peerage of Scotland.

The heir was dubbed the Marquess of Carmarthen, whose eldest son, Earl of Danby and his eldest son again as Viscount Latimer.

1859 inherited the eighth Duke the Baron Tite Godolphin, of Farnham Royal in the County of Buckingham. This was in 1832 for Francis Godolphin Osborne, the younger brother of George Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds, created. This title, which belonged to the peerage of the United Kingdom was, since connected to the Dukedom.
