George Tobias

George Tobias (* July 14, 1901 in New York City; † February 27, 1980 in Los Angeles ) was an American theater and film actor.

Life

Born into a Jewish family in New York born City, George Tobias began with 15 years his acting career at the Neighborhood Playhouse and then played several years with the Theatre Guild and the Provincetown Players in New York's Broadway, so among other things, 1935 in Sidney Howard's Paths of Glory. It eventually spotted by a talent scout from Warner Brothers, Tobias followed the end of the 1930s to Hollywood.

After he received a contract with Warner Brothers, Tobias played mostly in supporting roles the lovable friend of the main character, such as James Cagney in the most beautiful city ( The Strawberry Blonde, 1941) and Yankee Doodle Dandy ( 1942) and Gary Cooper in Sergeant York ( 1941). Here, Tobias proven to be a versatile character actor in various film genres, including comedies, dramas, film and film musicals. Often, he has appeared in roles with Slavic background, as in Music in My Heart ( 1940) as a Russian cook alongside Rita Hayworth or in Rouben Mamoulians silk stockings ( Silk Stockings, 1957) as Vassili Markovitch on the side of Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. He played this role from 1955 to 1956, directed by Cy Feuer alongside Don Ameche and Hildegard Knef on Broadway.

From the mid- 1950s he also appeared on television. He was, for example, as a neighbor Abner Kravitz in 54 episodes of the American television series Bewitched ( Bewitched, 1964-1971 ) can be seen. In 1977 he retired from the film business.

George Tobias, who was never married, but for decades cultivated a relationship with actress Milicent Patrick, died in 1980 in Los Angeles at the age of 78 years to bladder cancer. He was on the New Mount Carmel Cemetery in Queens, New York, buried.
