Action
Danny Kenny, his brother Eddie and Peggy Nash are friends since childhood. Growing up in the slums of the East Side of New York City, they have only one desire: to rise out of their misery. Danny works as a truck driver. As his musical brother Eddie wants to go to music school, Danny earned the money for school with boxing matches. Peggy, however, wants to be a star as a dancer. With her dance partner Murray Burns makes his way to glory. But her affection for her childhood friend Danny is stronger than the will to own stardom. As as a boxer Danny is successful, it returns to it and is initially her dance career. But a tempting commitment, they can return to the stage. However, this forced Danny's ambition as a boxer. With won championships, he wants to win back Peggy. In the decisive championship fight he is dirty tricks seriously injured and blinded. Peggy hears the fight on the radio and want to return to it. However, it is rejected by Danny's manager Scotty MacPherson. When Eddie finally can imagine his composition at Carnegie Hall, Peggy is also among the guests, while Danny hears the broadcast on the radio. To get back at people, he now works as a newspaper seller. Eddie dedicates the composition of his blind brother. Peggy returns to the concert stirred back to Danny.

During filming, director Anatole Litvak injured his eye. Jean Negulesco directed the film work for a short time.
The piece of music that Eddie Kenny must perform at Carnegie Hall, has many similarities with George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue on - a musical tribute to the great city of New York, as it wants to be, this film, the different people on the way up and shows in the spotlight: Danny, tried as a professional boxer on the honest way and fails to dirty machinations of it; Peggy, who seeks a career in show business over the dance; Googie, who wants to fight despite several previous convictions as a criminal upwards and thereby perish, and finally Eddie, who finds his way to public recognition in the ( serious ) music.
