George William de Saulles

George William de Saulles ( born February 4, 1862 in Birmingham, † July 21, 1903 in London) was an English sculptor and medalist. Signatures: "DES", "DS", or "WS".

Life

De Saulles ' ancestors came from Switzerland. He started early with his successful training at the Birmingham School of Art under the director Edward R. Taylor. His training center is now part of Birmingham City University. Then he was apprenticed to the engraver John Wilcox in Birmingham. Since 1884 he worked in London for John Harvey Pinches, medalist and engraver. In 1888 he went back to Birmingham to work for the medalist Joseph Moore.

From 1892 de Saulles was an employee of the Royal Mint in London. In 1893, he was an engraver of this mint. Until his death he was there engraver for English and colonial coins and official medals.

Most recently, he was working on a label for King Edward VII and passed away suddenly after a short illness in Chiswick West London on 21 July 1903.
