Georges Candilis

Georges Candilis (also Georgios Kandylis Greek Γεώργιος Κανδύλης, born April 9, 1913 in Baku, † 10 May 1995 ) was a Greek architect, city planner and a member of Team 10, a 1953 to 1981 existing group of architects, including Team X or called Team Ten.

Life

In 1925 he moved with his family from Russia to Athens, where he studied architecture at the Technical University.

From 1945 he worked in Paris with Le Corbusier. He stayed there and opened his own office in 1954, and later (1975 ) was added another office in Athens. Candilis -with its emphasis on social housing and housing in general. His most important buildings in Germany is the main building of the humanities and social science institutes of the Free University of Berlin, which was carried out by an international architectural competition in 1963, won the Candilis together with the team from 10 in 1967. Due to its very Corten steel executed, rust-red exterior facade is in the Berlin local press often jokingly referred to as the rust bucket.
