Georgi Kitov

Georgi Kitov ( Bulgarian Георги Китов; born March 1, 1943 in Dupniza, Bulgaria, † 14 September, 2008 at Starossel Panagjurischte, Bulgaria) was a Bulgarian archaeologist and Thrakologe.

Georgi Kitov was known with his research on the Thracian internationally. He discovered in 2000 Panagjurischte the headwaters of the Maritsa, north of Pazardzhik in Sredna Gora Mountains, a temple and a tomb dating from the Thracian ruler Sitalkes I ( 5th century BC). In a further excavations in the Valley of the Thracian kings several archaeological artifacts were discovered gold and bronze. The grave found belonged to the Thracian king Seuthes III. The tomb lies within Shipka, near Kazanlak and was named by Kitov " Goliama Kosmatka ". In 2000, he discovered the Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo Haskovo. The grave contains unique inscriptions from the 4th century BC Near Sliven the golden mask of another king was discovered.

In professional circles, Kitov was controversial. So he sat in excavations often excavator instead of spades and brushes to achieve a greater pace and forestall treasure robbers. He was dismissed as head of the Thracian unit of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum in Sofia and deprived him for a year the excavation permit in 2001. On the evening of 14 September 2008, he died at the archaeological place of Starossel of a heart attack.
