Gerard Seghers

Gerard Seghers ( spelling variant: Geerard Seghers, born March 17, 1591 in Antwerp, † March 18, 1651 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch painter.

Life and work

Seghers was a pupil of Abraham Janssens. After he was 1608/ 09 appointed master to Seghers went from 1611 to 1621 on a study trip to Italy and Spain. He was interested in the Caravaggio school, he studied the works of Caravaggio, of 10 years older Bartolomeo Manfredi and Gerard Honthorst in Rome. After that he stayed some time in Spain before he returned to his home and began his studies in his works. From 1625 he devoted himself to the work of Peter Paul Rubens, whose style he gives to recognize in 1630 in his paintings. He created numerous altarpieces for religious institutions in Belgium, Cologne and the Jesuits offices. The interpretation of the Carravggioschule found in his genre pictures. Many of his works no longer exist or are only handed down in stitches. His son was Jan Baptist Seghers.

In the Belgian churches are numerous altarpieces by him, which reveal the influence of Rubens in part. His main work is the Adoration of the Magi (1630, in the Church of Our Lady Bruges ).

His work Adoration of the Three Kings in Mexico is in the style of Mannerism.

His brother Daniel Seghers was a Flemish still-life painter, who drew next to his own works, copies of paintings by Rubens and his master pupil of Anthony van Dyck.
