Gerhard Schedl

Schedl (* August 5, 1957 in Vienna, † 30 November 2000 Eppstein ) was an Austrian composer.

Life

Schedl studied from 1967 violin and guitar, played in various bands, before he ( relatively late ) turned to 1972, the composition. Between 1976 and 1980 he studied one hand musicology at the University of Vienna, without making this a degree, on the other hand, at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (then University of Music and Performing Arts ) composition with Erich Urbanner, music theory and counterpoint as well as in minor in conducting with Otmar Suitner. He completed this training path in 1980 with a diploma with honors.

In 1980, Schedl came forward with a total of three works, including the children's opera The Swineherd after the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, for which he received the second prize at the City of Dresden Carl -Maria -von- Weber- competition. In 1982 he received there the second prize for the chamber opera II bass.

From 1981 he held a lectureship at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main, from 1982. Additionally at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz From 1987 to 2000, he led, together with Kühnl the Frankfurt Courses for New Music.

Schedl created three works commissioned by the Salzburg State Theater. He was so in the nineties, one of Austria's most important composers of musical theater works.

Due to increasing depression Schedl took at the age of 43 years in Eppstein in the Taunus mountains in the autumn of 2000 the life. He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 40, Number 97 ).
