Gerhard Waibel (engineer)

Gerhard Waibel ( born October 3, 1938 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a designer of gliders Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co.

His father, Charles Waibel had worked with Wolf Hirth in the 1920s. Gerhard began in 1948 with flight models and helped in 1951 when building a SG38. Then he studied as a member of Akaflieg Darmstadt. Since 1962 father arranged for him and Wolf Lemke an internship at a steel plant in Sheffield, where they began the way to develop the D -36 Circe. After further developments after their return to Germany Waibel won with the D- 36, the German Championships 1964 in the open class.

1964 began his work at Schleicher. His first design, the AS 12, based on the D36 and served as a prototype for the production model ASW 12 Then he constructed almost all high-performance gliders for Schleicher, to the ASW 28, which first flew in May 2000. The "W " in the model designation of a Schleicher - aircraft stands for the designer Waibel. In August 2003, he retired after 39 years of service.
