Getronagan Armenian High School

The Armenian high school Getronagan (Armenian Ազգային Կեդրոնական Վարժարան, Turkish Özel Getronagan Ermeni Lisesi ) is a armenischsprachiges school in Karaköy / Istanbul.

The Armenian Apostolic Patriarch of Constantinople Opel, Archbishop Nerses II Varjabédian, invited on December 16, 1882 Important Armenian financiers to patriarchy in order to restore the Patriarchate and to establish the Getronagan school. On the first day of 1450 lira were collected. As the Patriarch did not see due to his illness in a position to finalize everything before his death, he gave the school's foundation priority and pushed the work on the Patriarchate on.

For this, the Patriarch Nerses Varjabedyan Foundation was established, and Apik Uncuyan, A. Cunt, Mgirdic Yesayan, H. Hagopyan, H. Narodunkyan, A. and D. Gülbenkyan Gümüşgerdan were the first members of the foundation.

With the money that was collected by the initiative Nerses II Varjabédian, school opened on 1 September 1886. The Catholicos Magar, the religious leader of all Armenians, and Archbishop Harutiun I. Vehabedian, the patriarch of Constantinople Opel, conducted the opening ceremony. Minas Tscheras became the first director.

The school is currently both boys as well as girls' school. In 2001 the school had 182 students.
