Levon Shant

Schant Levon (Armenian Լէւոն Շանթ, born Levon Seghposian; born April 6, 1869 in Istanbul, † November 29, 1951 in Beirut ) was an Armenian playwright, novelist, poet and founder of the " Foundation of the national culture."

Seghposian grew up in a wealthy family, but at the age of six years for orphans. In 1891 he began to write and the pseudonym Schant put ( flash) to. From 1892 to 1899 he studied at the universities of Leipzig, Jena and Munich, then he went to Paris. After living in Tbilisi and Istanbul, he came in 1913 to Europe and so escaped the Armenian genocide from 1915. From 1918-1920 Schant was in Yerevan member of parliament of the newly established Democratic Republic of Armenia in 1921 after its incorporation into the Soviet Union, he was imprisoned. Liberated by an underground organization, he came first to Tehran, before he settled down for the rest of his life in Lebanon. In Beirut, he was co-founder of the educational and cultural society Hamazkayin and Head of the Armenian Academy.

The two pieces of The Emperor and Ancient Gods are the most staged Armenian dramas.
