Ghazipur (Hindi: ग़ाज़ीपुर, Urdu: غازیپور; Gazipur [ ː zi ː ɣa pʊr ] ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with around 110,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It lies on the north bank of the Ganges some 70 kilometers north-east of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh East near the border of the neighboring Federal State of Bihar. The city is the administrative center of the district of Ghazipur.

Ghazipur was founded in 1330 by a Muslim commander named Masud, who had previously defeated the local Raja. The Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq gave him the land of the defeated Raja and awarded him the honorary title of Ghazi, who gave the name of the newly founded city. The local Hindu tradition derives the name of Gadhi other hand, the father of the mythical seer Vishwamitra, ago.

Lord Cornwallis, the British Governor General of India, died in 1805 in Ghazipur and is buried there.
