Gibraltar Airport ( engl. Gibraltar Airport, IATA code GIB, ICAO code: LXGB ) is a commercial and military airport in Gibraltar ( Iberian Peninsula). The military refers to the device as a Royal Air Force Station Gibraltar (short RAF Gibraltar). Flying units, the Royal Air Force no longer permanently stationed here.
The airport is the largest airport of the British overseas territories. It is located 500 meters from the city center.
History
The airport was built in 1939 when Gibraltar during the Second World War had an immense importance for the armed forces of Great Britain, and initially served only as an emergency landing for the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy.
On 2 December 1987, a contract was concluded between Great Britain and Spain, after the airport also has a civilian use is granted. In this case, the construction of a new airport walkway on Spanish territory ( north side of the airport ) was agreed (La Línea de la Concepción ). This agreement was never implemented because the Gibraltar Government under Joe Bossano not ratified it.
Airlines and destinations
Gibraltar is not served directly from German speaking countries: British Airways flies daily via London Heathrow, easyJet daily via London Gatwick. Monarch Airlines flies from London Luton airport daily.
There are no direct flights to Spain; in the past there were between 16 December 2006 and December 2008, a daily direct flight with the Spanish airline Iberia to Madrid. Today, Gibraltar is how to achieve only through England again before 2006.
Particularity
Due to the low Gibraltar surface runway intersects Winston Churchill Avenue, the only road link with Spain. This road (similar to a railroad crossing ) each time and at each landing disabled. Such an intersection is unique in the world for an international airport. In maneuvers of the Royal Air Force ( RAF), it therefore leads to greater disabilities, most recently in the summer of 2012, when eight Panavia Tornados operated for a month from here.
