Giovanni Arrighi

Giovanni Arrighi (* July 7, 1937 in Milan, Italy, † 18 June 2009) was an Italian sociologist who conducted research in the field of political economy.

Life and work

Arrighi began studying economics at Bocconi University in Milan and graduated from the receipt of the doctoral degree in 1960. In the following years he worked at various universities in Africa and Italy as a lecturer. From 1963 Arrighi worked at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. There he was arrested in July 1966 along with several other teachers on charges of political activities. After a week-long stay in prison, he was deported. Immediately following these events Arrighi worked in tansianischen Dar es Salaam at the local University of Dar es Salaam. In 1969 he returned to Europe and took over as a lecturer in the field of sociology and social sciences among others at the University of Trento various teaching posts.

Arrighi was politically active in the 1970s and was at the beginning of the decade, co-founder of Gruppo Gramsci. When the group drifted more and more towards an orthodox Marxism to Arrigho separated in 1973 by her. From 1979 to 1999 he worked as a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. There, he taught and conducted research at the Fernand Braudel Center. In 1999 he moved to the Johns Hopkins University, where he served until 2002 as director of the Institute for Global Studies in Culture, Power and History. From 2003 to 2009 he held a chair of sociology at Johns Hopkins University.

Arrighi was a member of several scientific associations, including the American Sociological Association. Arrighi was an important representative of the world - system theory based on Immanuel Wallerstein.

He was married to the end of his life with sociologist Beverly Silver. He had a son from a previous marriage. Arrighi passed away due to cancer in June 2009.
