Giovanni Baglione

Giovanni Baglione ( pron. baljone ) (* 1571 in Rome, there † December 30, 1643 ) was an Italian painter of the Mannerist and art writer.

His work

Giovanni Baglione painted many religious pictures for Rome, Perugia, Loreto in the manner of the Cavaliere d' Arpino influenced by Mannerist. While these images, which once earned him high praise, are forgotten for the most part today, to Baglione has a lasting contribution to the history of art acquired by the collection of artist biographies, which in 1644 in Rome under the title: Le vite de'pittori, Scultori, architetti ed intagliatori dal Pontificato de Gregorio XIII del 1572 fino a ' tempi di Papa Urbano VIII nel 1642 appeared. This collection is an important source of work, which, however, is not free of subjective negative judgments ( primarily through Caravaggio ). Furthermore, he gave in 1639 a description of the new churches of Rome out.

Giovanni Baglione painted as a competitor and envious of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, a counterpart to the Amor Victorious ( 1602-03, Gemäldegalerie Berlin ) entitled Amor sacro e amor profano - Sacred and Profane Love (1602, Gemäldegalerie in Berlin ) in which the heavenly Cupid earthly chastises. For this painting, however Baglione reaped scorn and derision. The dispute resulted in a libel case, the Baglione against Caravaggio in 1603 and two other painters ( Orazio Gentileschi, Fillipo Trisengni ) and the architect Onorio Longhi strained.
