Fingerkärpfling ( Girardinus microdactylus )

Girardinus is a genus of viviparous tooth carp ( Poeciliinae ). The fish are endemic to Cuba and the largest neighboring island Isla de la Juventud.

Features

Girardinus species reach lengths between 2.5 cm and 5 cm (males), or between 4 cm and 9 cm (females ). They are small, inconspicuous fish from yellowish to brownish- oliver staining. Females are larger and are colored pale. The fins are transparent in most cases. The gonopodium of the male is very long. Macroscopic features with which the genus can be diagnosed are not present.

Way of life

Girardinus species live both in standing and in weedy calm flowing waters. They feed on invertebrates and vegetable-based foods

Girardinus is the type genus of the tribe Girardini which also includes four other species similarly unimpressive fish include Phallichthys, Phalloptychus, Poeciliopsis and Xenophallus.
