Girellinae

Girella fimbriata

The Nage perch ( Girellidae ) are marine fish from the group perch relatives ( Percomorphaceae ). They are primarily in the central Pacific from the Philippines to Australia before. Girella nigricans lives off the coast of California and Graus nigra off the coast of Chile. Only species in the Atlantic is Girella zonata. Stevenage perch live on rocky shores and in kelp beds.

Features

Stevenage perch, 15 to 71 cm long, are generally high backs and have a continuous dorsal fin. The fish are primarily algae eaters and have numerous adjustments in their jaw anatomy to nibble the algae from the rock. Some incisor -like teeth in the front jaw and fast feeding movements of the jaw led to its German name. The palate is edentulous. Your maxillary be largely obscured by the Suborbitalia. The dorsal fin has 7-16 spines.

System

The Nage perch are generally regarded as subfamily the control perch ( Kyphosidae ) attributed ( Nelson, 2006), more recent classifications and phylogenetic analyzes provided but to the rank of a separate family. They are close to the control perch, beak perch ( Oplegnathidae ), akin to the Grunzbarschen ( Terapontidae ) and flag tails ( Kuhliidae ).
