Girolamo Maria Gotti

Girolamo Maria Cardinal Gotti OCD ( born March 29, 1834 in Genoa, birth name: Antonio Giovanni Benedetto Gotti, † March 16, 1916 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Gotti joined in 1849 the Order of the Discalced Carmelites in and received on 20 December 1856, the ordination. As theological adviser of his Order of General Domenico di San Giuseppe, he participated in the First Vatican Council.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him in 1892 Titular Archbishop of Petra in Egypto. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Lucido Maria Parocchi. As Internuncio Gotti traveled to Brazil in the same year. Leo XIII. took him on 29 November 1895 as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santa Maria della Scala to the College of Cardinals.

From 1902 to 1916, Gotti Prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda, 1896-1899 Prefect of the Congregation for the sale of indulgences and relics and 1899-1902 Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and religious people. Gotti participated in the conclaves of 1903 and 1914. In the conclave of 1903 Girolamo Gotti was considered papabile.
