Giuseppe Bertello

Giuseppe Cardinal Bertello ( born October 1, 1942 in Foglizzo, Torino Province, Italy ) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Bertello received on 29 June 1966 by Bishop Albino Mensa ordination. Then he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. On October 17, 1987, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Archbishop of Urbs Salvia and sent him as Apostolic Nuncio to West Africa (Togo, Ghana and Benin). His episcopal ordination took place on November 28, 1987 by the then Secretary of State Cardinal Agostino Casaroli. From 1991 to 1995 he represented the Holy See in shaken by civil war Rwanda. After a short stint in the Vatican Secretariat of State, he was employed Vatican observer to the UN agencies in Geneva and the World Trade Organization. From 2000 to 2007 he represented the Holy See in Mexico. In 2007 he sent Benedict XVI. as Nuncio to Italy and San Marino.

On September 3, 2011 that Pope Benedict XVI. Bertello as successor to Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo as President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican City. He took both items on 1 October 2011.

In solemn consistory of February 18, 2012 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia to the College of Cardinals.

With the mission to support the Pope in the management of the universal Church, and changes in the organization of the Curia regulatory Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus prepare, Pope Francis him in April 2013 as a member of the Cardinal Council, a group of eight cardinals, the Pope in terms to advise on the reform of the Curia determined.
