Giuseppe Bonito

Giuseppe Bonito ( born November 1, 1707 Castellammare di Stabia, † May 19, 1789 in Naples) was an Italian painter from the late baroque and classicism.

Life

Bonito was a pupil of Francesco Solimena in Naples, whose style he adopted in his earlier works. Later, lose the school influences by finding his own style of painting on reductions and strong illumination ( Chiaroscuro ) of figures and architecture. Later, he focuses his work on the portrait and genre painting.

1751 he was appointed court painter to the King of Naples, in 1752 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and in 1755 head of the newly founded Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples and director of the Royal Tapestry Workshop.

For larger orders for fresco painting, he worked with Francesco de Mura. His often somewhat bawdy genre pictures with street children and the commedia dell'arte figures were often confused with those of Gaspare Traversi.

One of his students was Elijah Interguglielmi.
