Giuseppe Gargani

Giuseppe Gargani ( born April 23, 1935 in Morra De Sanctis ) is an Italian lawyer and politician of the Unione di Centro ( UDC ) and, since June 6, 2011 Member of the European Parliament. Previously, he served as a member of the Italian Parliament for the Christian Democratic and Christian Democrats from 1999 to 2009 MEP for the right-wing Forza Italia or its successor party Popolo della Libertà.

Life

Already during his studies in law to Gargani in 1956 with the Christian Democratic Party Christian Democrats ( DC), where he held various party posts. Among other things, he was DC Regional Secretary for Campania and member of the party executive and spokesman on justice matters. 1970-1972 was Gargani President of the province of Avellino, from 1972 to 1994 he was a member of the Italian Parliament, where he was repeatedly elected as Chairman of the Legal Committee. 1979 to 1984 he also served as Secretary of State in the Italian Ministry of Justice.

After the dissolution of DC and the founding of the new party, Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi under 1994 Gargani closed at this and ran from 2001 the Department of Justice of the party. 2009, the Forza Italia finally went on in the Popolo della Libertà newly established.

In the European elections of 1999 he was elected to the European Parliament, where he was a board member of the EPP-ED group. He was also first to 2002, Chairman of the Culture Committee, from 2002 Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market (from the 2004 European elections, only the Legal Committee ).

In the European elections in Italy in 2009, took in the Gargani on the PdL list, he would have won in his constituency Southern Italy according to its number of preferential votes again a seat in Parliament.
