Giuseppe Lauricella

Giuseppe Lauricella (* December 15, 1867 in Agrigento, † January 9, 1913 in Catania ) was an Italian mathematician who dealt with Analysis.

Lauricella studied in Pisa with Luigi Bianchi, Ulisse Dini and Vito Volterra with the conclusion of 1892. Afterwards he was a year assistant in Pisa and taught at technical institutes. In 1898 he was appointed Professor of Analysis at the University of Catania after a competition. In 1910 he went to Rome, but returned back already after one year to Catania. He died of scarlet fever, which he picked up in the care of his sick child.

He dealt with analysis ( harmonic analysis, potential theory, integral equations and integro-differential equations) and applications in physics ( theory of elasticity ). He is known today for a necessary and sufficient condition for the unity of a system of orthogonal functions ( set of Lauricella ). From him studied hypergeometric series in three variables are named after him. About the same time also studied Paul appeal in France hypergeometric series in several variables.

He was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei (1907).
