Glacial lake

A Gletscherrandsee or Gletscherendsee is arisen in the field of basic or terminal moraine of a glacier standing water.

Formation

A hollow mold is carved out by the flowing ice of the glacier tongue. The end and lateral moraines form a natural dam. By fine sediments of the ground and the terminal moraine are sealed so that collect the meltwater of the glacier in the basin and the retreat of the glacier tongue can form a lake. Today, these lakes are usually fed by rain and groundwater, in the Alps continue the melting water from the higher areas. The most edge of the glacier lakes formed after the end of the Ice Age, but they also occur after the melting glaciers today.

Zungenbeckensee / Fjordsee

A special, postglacial lake form the resulting Zungenbeckensee. Through the Ice Age glaciers deepened basin, so called tongue basin, there are in all ice-covered regions prior periods. Whether the resulting therein lakes are specifically referred to as Fjord lakes, depends on the direction of movement of the pelvis forming ice. Where is the ice pushed down through mountain valleys, as in the formation of fjords, it is called Fjord lakes. Where the ice from the ice sheets of a sea - in Europe, the Baltic Sea - was, according to the origin of the fjords, you do not speak of Fjordsee. Such lakes are found south and east of the Baltic Sea in northern Germany and other regions.

Examples

Edge of the glacier lakes are about in northern Brandenburg, the Alpenvorländern and in inner-alpine basin frequently encountered:
