The Glenfinnan Monument

The Glenfinnan Monument situated on the shores of Loch Shiel. It was built in 1815 to plans by the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham, to mark the place where in 1745 the standard of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was raised early in the second Jakobi Terre Volte.

Prince Charles broke up from France and landed in Eriskay in the Western Isles. From there he rowed in a boat to the coast at Loch nan Uamh, just west of Glenfinnan. Here he met members of the clan MacDonald, who received support from other MacDonalds, Camerons and MacDonnells in the next few days. When he decided to have enough support, he hoisted on Monday, 19 August 1745 at the nearby hill his royal standard and claimed the Scottish and English throne on behalf of his father, James Francis Edward Stuart. This was the beginning of the rebellion that was put down eight months later at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746.

After the battle, the loser Charles came to his fleeing the troops of the government again in the same area. There he could hide and sail away later with a French frigate off the coast, near the place where he had landed, again. The monument marks the place where this happened.

1815 was Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale build a memorial on which a statue of Highlanders was seen in a kilt, to commemorate the historical events of this place. August 19th is celebrated there every year by Jacobites in memory. The monument stands at its present location, because the initially planned square in 1812, thanks to Thomas Telford had been installed by a road through Glenfinnan. Alexander Macdonald died before the completion of the works.

Since 1938, the Glenfinnan Monument is managed by the National Trust for Scotland. A visitor center was built, which provides all the necessary amenities for tourism as guided tours, exhibitions, cafes, shops and other facilities.
