Glenorchy, Tasmania

Glenorchy is a town and suburb of Hobart in the South East of the Australian state of Tasmania. It is located about 9 km northwest of the city center on the east bank of the Derwent River. The land was previously used for agricultural purposes, mainly for fruit growing, but mostly densely built today and is considered a working-class neighborhood. The city is the administrative seat of the Local Government Area Glenorchy City.

The main road from Glenorchy is the Main Road, which runs through the city in a north-south direction.

Glenorchy is a town area, and so some districts are known by other names:

  • Elwick lies to the east of the Brooker Highway, and also includes the racecourse in Tattersalls Park and the Royal Hobart Showground ( exhibition area )
  • Merton includes the area around the Barossa Road, as well as the surrounding bushland between Glenorchy and Lenah Valley.

Train

The primary schools are the Glenorchy Primary School and the Brent Street Primary School, the secondary schools are the Cosgrove High School, Guilford Young College and Dominic College.

Public institutions

In Glenorchy, there are many public buildings of the northern suburbs of Hobart, for example, an outdoor swimming pool, a movie theater, a stadium for Australian Football, a football stadium, a Bowl Club and the Tolosa Park, a city park. In the city and the Tasmanian Transport Museum is located. In Tolosa Park there is an open-air auditorium, which is mainly used for music events.

Shopping

In the center of Glenorchy there are three major shopping centers, the Northgate Shopping Centre, Glenorchy Central ( Centro) and the Glenorchy Plaza. In addition, many large supermarket chains are represented, for example, Best & Less, Coles, Woolworths, Big W, Mitre 10 Home & Trade and Target.
