Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus

Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus († 55 BC) was a Roman Senator, the military and politicians.

Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus belonged to the branch of the family of Cornelius Lentuli. In 76 or 75 BC Marcellinus was - probably in Spain - mint master and treasurer. 68 BC he was possibly tribune. The following year he took over as legatus per praetore under Pompey part in the pirate war. When he acted while the coast of Africa, he was patron of Cyrene. 60 BC he was praetor, and was then 59 and 58 BC propraetor in Syria.

In the year 56 BC Lentulus was consul with Lucius Marcius Philippus. During this time, he promoted the emerging Marcus Tullius Cicero. He stood in the Publius Clodius Pulcher opposition to what in particular in year 61 BC and came in his consulship to bear. Marcellinus was the spokesman of the Optimates and tried to fight the members of the first triumvirate, Gaius Julius Caesar, Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus. After his consulship, he withdrew from politics. He died shortly thereafter.

Marcellinus was a member of the priestly college of Septemviri epulonum. He himself or a son was probably married to Scribonia, which should be later second wife of the future Emperor Augustus.
