Gobiesocidae

Cochleoceps orientalis

The sign Pisces ( Gobiesocidae ), also known as sign bellies or sucker, are a family from the group of the perch family ( Percomorpha ). They are most closely related to the mucus Fishy ( Blennioidei ). The nearly 160 species in 36 genera live in temperate, subtropical and tropical seas, a few also in fresh water and brackish water.

Features

It is grundelähnliche, highly specialized animals. The pelvic fins are a sucking disk with which the fish can hold on to the ground, overgrown. The skin has no scales, but a thick layer of mucus. A swim bladder is absent. To mention are the genital papilla of males and the absence of Basi and Orbitosphenoid in the skull. The gills on the fourth arch missing half or whole.

Most fish are long only about five centimeters, some only 2-3 centimeters, the largest species ( Chorisochismus dentex ) can be 30 inches long. The species of the genus Alabes ( subfamily Cheilobranchinae ) are eel - ( " Küstenaale " ) or actually vermiform ( because of their small size), her suction cup is small or disappeared.

Way of life

Sign fish usually inhabit shallow water with a rocky bottom and algae or live in seagrass beds. Only a few species are found in coral reefs. Some species live in symbiosis with invertebrates, the hair Star Shield belly ( Discotrema crinophila ) and the sea urchin plate belly ( Diademichthys lineatus ). When sea urchin plate belly ( Diadema sp. ) Lives between the spines of sea urchins Diadem, one has found, however, that he eats the feet of sea urchins. Thus, it is more likely to parasitism.
