Gobionellinae

Goldringelgrundel ( Brachygobius xanthozonus )

The Gobionellinae are a subfamily grundelartiger fish, which contains about 370 species in 55 genera. In German the subfamily is sometimes referred to as Zwerggrundeln.

Dissemination

Species of the subfamily occur mainly along the coasts of tropical and moderately warm seas, but absent in the northeastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Ponto Caspian region. They usually live in estuaries, a few species in freshwater. The region of the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and the temperate Australia is dominated by species from the Mugilogobius group, although species from the Stenogobius group occur. The latter is the only Gobionellinae group in the western Atlantic and the eastern central Atlantic. The genera Acanthogobius, Astrabe and Chasmichthys are endemic to the temperate North Pacific. Since the axial skeleton has some similarities they may form, together with other species from the region, a monophyletic group.

Features

Petzold as features for Gobionellinae two pores at the front between the eyes, two Epurale ( elongated, detached bones in the caudal skeleton) and a Pterygiophoren pattern of 3-12210. In some species, some of these features have been modified subsequently. None of these features is, however, regarded as a synapomorphy, because the importance of these features is still too little understood.

Larsen has 25 to 28, in exceptional cases, on some North Pacific species, up to 42 vertebrae and is called two or three, sometimes four Afterflossenpterygiophoren before the first Hämaldorn as a further feature.

Outer systematics

In the traditional system the Gobionellinae form a subfamily of gobies ( Gobiidae ), in the new, based on molecular biological studies Grundelsystematik by Christine E. Thacker they, together with the Mudskipper relatives ( Oxudercinae ), the Aalgrundeln ( Amblyopinae ) and the Lippenzahngrundeln ( Sicydiinae ) the new family Gobionellidae.
