Goethe-Plakette des Landes Hessen

The Goethe Medal is the highest award that gives the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art since 1949 at irregular intervals. It is undoped.

History

After the collapse of the Nazi regime was by the Allies with the Control Council Law No. 8 of Article IV prohibited on 30 November 1945, the wearing of military or civilian medals and decorations in Germany. This general ban was lifted after the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany by Act No. 7 of the Allied High Commission of 21 September 1949. In the same year founded the then Minister of Culture Erwin Stein, the Goethe Medal in recognition of the Hessian Ministry of Culture. It was after 1945, the first national award ever.

The plaque is made of bronze and was designed by the sculptor Robert Bednorz. On the front it shows a side view of a head portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The back is a flying eagle in a symbolized representation. The plaque will be presented in a box along with a certificate.

The plaque will be awarded to persons, public or cultural life that have encouraged and influenced the arts and culture beyond the requirements of their profession and also who through their life's work in a special way to the cultural development of the state of Hesse. The support of the Goethe Medal are named by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art.

The root term " Goethe Medal ", the current name of the Ministry of Culture is added. For a long time she was therefore called the Goethe Medal of the Hessian Ministry of Education, and Culture.

The city of Frankfurt am Main awarded the Goethe Prize in addition also a Goethe plaque.
