Gojjam

Goddscham, also Gojjam Gojjam or written ( Amharic ጎጃም goǧǧam, originally ጐዛም g ʷ äzzam, later ጐዣም g ʷ äžžam, ጎዣም gožžam ), is a historical province of Ethiopia.

It lies in the west of the country in today's Amhara region, south east of Lake Tana and the Sudanese border on the river Abbai. Their capital city was Debre Markos.

Geography

The earliest western borders of Gojjam were not fixed. In 1700 Agawmeder in the southwest and Qwara were in the northwest as neighbors of Gojjam. Agawmeder, that was never an organized political entity, was incorporated into Gojjam, which extended so westward to the Sultanate of Gubba. Gubba acknowledged its dependence 1898 by Menelik II in 1942 and incorporated in Gojjam. The Dek Island in lake Tana to 1987 belonged administratively to Gojjam.

History

The earliest known mention Gojjams found in a manuscript of Amda Seyon campaigns here and in Damot 1316/17, in the course of which the area was incorporated into Ethiopia. To 1451 it appears on the Egyptus Novello map on which it is described as a kingdom, though it was subordinate to the Emperor of Ethiopia at that time. Emperor David II ( Lebna Dengel ) described in 1526 in a letter to the King of Portugal also Gojjam as a kingdom, but that was part of his empire.

At least since the time of Eleni (Helena) Gojjam provided the revenues for the Empress of Ethiopia until the time of Zemene Mesafint Fasil Damot of these appropriated. Gojjam was then I at least until the reign of Tekle Haymanot to power based on various warlords.

In recent times, the inhabitants of Gojjam rejected - Gojjame called - twice against tax increases on, the first time in 1950 and the second time in 1968, coinciding with a revolt in Bale. Unlike in Bale, the central government not resorted to military means, but replaced the governors and left from trying to introduce new taxes. Given the riots in 1968, she gave even reaching back to 1950 on tax claims.

Under the Derg government Gojjam was divided into East Gojjam with Debre Markos capital and West Gojjam with Bahir Dar as its capital. According to the new constitution in 1995 was the westernmost part of Gojjam Zone of the Benishangul for Metekel - Gumuz Region, the remaining parts were to zones Agew Awai, mirab Gojjam (West Gojjam ) and Misraq Gojjam (East Gojjam ) of Amhara.
