Goliath was a VLF transmitter, which was operated from 1943 to 1945 by the Navy to provide communication with submerged submarines. The Goliath was with calbe an der Milde (since 1952: Kalbe (Milde ) ). With a transmission power of one megawatt plant which at the time was the most powerful transmitter in the world.

The site Kalbe (Milde ) was chosen because of the moist subsoil, as good earthing conditions are an important prerequisite for a high range of the transmitter.

The construction work on the 263 -acre site began in 1941 under the direction of C. Lorenz AG (Berlin- Tempelhof ); the operation could be taken up in 1943 after a construction period of 27 months. Goliath used as a transmitting antenna shield three antennas were mounted radially around three 210 -meter-high, insulated from earth Stahlrohrmaste and that were attached to each of six 170 meter high grounded steel framework masts. Three of these steel truss masts carried two antennas screen, so that a total of 15 steel truss masts exist.

By operating with long waves in the range 15 to 60 kHz, the communication could be the first time allows to submerged submarines at ranges over 10,000 km. Shortly before the war, parts of the station were destroyed by the operating personnel. On April 11, 1945 U.S. troops occupied the area and took advantage of it because of the existing high fence as a camp for 85,000 prisoners of war. Finally, the end of June 1945, the plant was handed over to the Soviet troops.

The Goliath, who was the model for many similar systems later, was dismantled by April 1947, the buildings and transmission towers blown up. Today, only a foundation of one of the 170 meter high masts obtained ( Koordinaten52.66916666666711.421944444444 ).

The disassembled transmission plant was first placed in the vicinity of Leningrad and in 1952 about 10 km south of Nizhny Novgorod ( Koordinaten56.17194444444443.931666666667 ) rebuilt. This transmitter was the first VLF transmitter of the Soviet Union. The transmission system is there to this day almost unchanged in operation and by the Russian Navy, including also for the time signal service RJH99 operated.

The name of the station is at the new location in Russian Goliaf ( Голиаф ).

The antenna system of the VLF transmitter Wilejka is amazingly similar to the investment of the strong Goliath, however, all poles are pretty much 100 meters higher.
