Gonystylus
Gonystylus is a plant genus of the family of Seidelbastgewächse ( Thymelaeaceae ). This genus contains about 30 species. The distribution area in southeastern Asia is Indomalesien and includes Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. The highest number of species found on Borneo. They are found mostly in wetlands. Ramin is the trading name of the wood of some species. Ramin wood are the most important Ausfuhrgut For the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Some species are listed in CITES Appendix III and protected in at least one country with a trade control.
Description
Gonystylus species grow as upright shrubs or medium-sized trees. The slow -growing trees can reach heights of growth of about 30 meters and trunk diameter of about 60 to 90 centimeters. The branch-free trunk length in adult trees usually 18 meters. The leaves are alternate and distichous or arranged almost constantly against the branches. The veins extending more or less parallel.
The inflorescences are constructed differently. There are bracts present. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and cup-shaped. There are four to five sepals present. The petals are reduced to a ring with scale-like appendages. There are 2-80 stamens present with horseshoe-shaped anthers. The two to eight carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. The fruits containing one to five seeds.
Wood
Ramin wood is light, with a regular structure and a straight or slightly wavy grain. Freshly cut wood often has an unpleasant odor, which is but vanished after the drying process. The wood is similar in strength of the book. However, it shatters easily and breaks down quickly at too high a load. Ramin wood is used for furniture production, as well as a carpenter wood. A portion is processed into wood profiles, handles, toys and other small parts. Wood developed when it becomes wet again an unpleasant odor. It is therefore not suitable for items that are easily wet.
The wood is diffuse-porous. The heartwood and sapwood is yellow to bright, the bulk density of from 0.55 to 0.57 g / cm ³.

The botanical genus name Gonystylus was published in 1862 by Johannes Elias Teijsmann & Simon Binnendijk in Botanical newspaper, Berlin, 20 ( 32), p.265. Type species is Gonystylus miquelianus Teijsm. & Binn .. A synonym for Gonystylus Teijsm. & Binn. is Asclerum Tiegh .. This genus was formerly also in their own family Gonystylaceae Tiegh. provided.
