Goodenia

Goodenia ovata

The Goodenien ( Goodenia ) are a genus of flowering plants of the order of the aster -like ( Asterales ). Most herbaceous species are almost exclusively confined to Australia.

Features

The species are herbaceous plants or small shrubs. The leaves are diverse.

The inflorescences are thyrsi, grapes or ears. The flowers are hermaphrodite. The calyx is free or fused. The deformed crown is spurred in some species, and usually two-lipped. At the top ( adaxial ) the corolla tube is deeply divided. The upper lip consists of two lobes, the shorter lower lip of three lobes. The stamens are free. The ovary is upper constant and usually zweifächrig. The anatropen ovules are per compartment or scattered, rarely individually in two rows. Pollination is by insects ( entomophily ).

The fruit is usually a capsule fruit, rarely a small, one-seeded nut fruit, or a large, hard, viersamige drupe. The seeds are rich in oily endosperm, usually flat and winged.

The basic chromosome number x = 8

Dissemination

With the exception of the endemic to Java type Goodenia konigsbergeri all species occur in Australia. The area of the species Goodenia armstrongiana, Goodenia purpurascens and Goodenia pumilio extends to New Guinea, which stretches from Goodenia pilosa up Indonesia, Southern China and the Philippines. All other species of the genus are endemic to Australia.

System

The genus was invented by British botanist James Edward Smith in 1793 by the Archbishop of Carlisle Samuel Goodenough ( 1743-1827 ), member of the Linnean Society named.

In the genus 179 species have been described. In the Flora of Australia the genus is divided as follows:

  • Subgenus Monochila ( G.Don ) Carolin: With 10 species in Western Australia.
  • Subgenus Goodenia without section assignment Caeruleae subsection ( Benth. ) Carolin: With 17 kinds.
  • Subsection Porphyranthus G.Don: With 15 kinds
  • Subsection Goodenia
  • Subsection Ebracteolatae K.Krause
  • Subsection Borealis Carolin
