Net panel ( Goodyera ) is the name of a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). The approximately 85 species are predominantly nordhemisphärisch widespread and have a diversity focus in Southeast Asia. Some of these relatively small-flowered species are popular for their attractive leaves with orchid growers as ornamental plants.

Description

In Goodyera species are perennial herbaceous plants. They have rhizomes, from which branch off both sterile shoots with leaf rosettes and fertile at the base usually creeping - ascending rung, ending in inflorescences. Many species form foothills.

The oval or lance-shaped leaves are short-stalked. Usually the leaf epidermis along the main and transverse nerves is significantly brighter than the rest of the blue-green leaf area. The leaf surfaces therefore usually show a contrasting mesh pattern. The stem leaves are heaped on the base or greatly reduced.

The einseitswendige or slightly twisted, eared inflorescence consists of an unbranched axis, sitting at the ungespornte, small, white - green flowers; the plants so remember to members of the genus Spiranthes. The flowers have a simple cup-like nectaries, the pollinia are sessile, the tip of the labellum is beak -shaped. The remaining five bracts form a small helmet.

Dissemination

The genus is widespread pantropical Goodyera and zirkumboreal. Of the approximately 85 species are about 60 ago in Southeast Asia. On the European continent, there is only one way to spread the zirkumboreal Creeping Net panel ( Goodyera repens ). The Moreton Bay Net panel ( Goodyera macrophylla) is endemic to Madeira. From 18 New World species are only four available in North America. The remaining eight species growing in East Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Reunion, Seychelles).

Name

The British botanist Robert Brown chose the scientific genus name in honor of John Goodyer, who was an eminent English botanists of the 17th century.

In English, the genus, as well as the representatives of the genus Spiranthes, as "Lady's tresses " means ( = Women's curls, ringlets ). This name alludes to the slightly twisted inflorescences. In America, the plants of the genus Goodyera "Rattlesnake Plantain " ( = Rattlesnake Plantain) hot because the rosettes have a hand similar to those of plantain ( Plantago major), on the other hand, recalls the power pattern of the leaf surfaces of a snake skin. Supposedly envelopes from the leaves of the North American Goodyera species were formerly used to treat snake bites.
