Gopinath Bordoloi

Gopinath Bordoloi ( born June 6 1890 in Raha, Nagaon, Assam; † August 6, 1950 in Guwahati, Assam ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress and a leading freedom fighter. It was 1938/39, and from 1946 until his death in 1950 head of government in Assam and the first Chief Minister of this state.

Bordoloi was directed during the partition of India against efforts to the Hindu -dominated, yet undivided Assam in the dominated by Islam East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to integrate. He organized protests, among other things. Only Sylhet was eventually incorporated East Pakistan after a referendum on 6 July 1947.

After Indian independence Bordoloi worked closely with Vallabhbhai Patel to protect Assam before communist China and East Pakistan. He also organized the return of millions of refugees who fled from East Pakistan because of unrest. His efforts led to stability and security in Assam.

Posthumously, he was the highest in 1999 Indian National Award, the Bharat Ratna, awarded. The airport in Guwahati bears his name.
