History

The first signs of human settlement in the area of today's Gostyń date from the year 1136. 1278 was the place of the Prince of Great Poland, the city right under Magdeburg law. From the beginning of the 14th century on the place lay in the territory of the city Kościan. In the 15th century a wooden church was built without the permission of the bishop, for which the founder of the church was punished. During the 15th and 16th century Gostyń was an important center of the Reformation. On June 15, 1565 a synod of different faiths took place here. 1668 moved to the Holy Sanctuary Berger ( Święta Góra ) as the first Oratory of St. Philip Neri on Polish territory. 1761 was a battle here between Russia and Prussia held during the Seven Years War. 1793, the city came under Prussian rule. 1807 came Gostyn in the Grand Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 back to Prussia. 1887, the city became the seat of the district Gostyn. In 1920, she became part of Poland. After the German occupation was renamed in 1940 Gostingen.
