The Goteik Viaduct (also known as Gohteik Viaduct ) is a railway trestle bridge at Nawnhkio, Shan State, Myanmar. It is the highest bridge in Myanmar and the largest railway trestle bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1900.

Location

The bridge is located about 100 km north-east of Mandalay on the railway line to Lashio, the capital of northern Shan State, Pyin U Lwin between cities (known as Mymyo, the summer capital of the former British colonial administration ) and Hsipaw.

Construction

The bridge was in 1899 by the Pennsylvania and Maryland Construction Comp. built and completed in 1900. The steel components are supplied by the Pennsylvania Steel Corp. , Their shipment was from the United States of America. The railway construction from Mandalay to Lashio was part of regional expansion plans of the British Empire. The construction project was under the direction of Sir Arthur Rendel, an engineer of the Burma Railroad Company. The rolling stock was originally British origin. In 1961 were Garratt locomotives for the Burma Railway on the route Mandalay - Lashio in full operation.

Bridge data

The viaduct extends from one end to the other over 15 support towers with spans of 12 meters and a twin tower of 24 m for a total length of 689 meters. The 15 towers carrying 10 truss, each 37 m long, 6 drive carriers with 18 yards and a carrier approach of 12 meters. The design brings the bridge to a height of 250 meters above the river level. The height of the bridge deck from the rail to the foundation of the highest tower is 102 meters. The total construction cost of the bridge amounted to 111,200 pounds sterling.

Due to the technical conditions and topographical conditions, this building is considered a masterpiece of world standard.
