Götz Adriani

Götz Adriani ( born November 21, 1940 in Stuttgart) is a German art historian. From 1971 to 2005 he was director of the Kunsthalle Tübingen and since 2003 he is the Executive Board of the Foundation of the same name.

Biography

Götz Adriani was born on November 21, 1940 in Stuttgart. Since his father was in 1945 died in Soviet captivity, it is particularly been his mother, who was able to care for her son, art and history. After graduation Adriani studied art history, archeology and history in Tübingen, Munich and Vienna. In 1964 he received his PhD on the topic The medieval Predigtort and its design.

The promotion of the 23 -year-old joined in 1965 as an intern at the State Gallery of Stuttgart, where he met his future wife Franziska. 1966 moved Adriani to the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt. There he was responsible for the painting department and for the reaching of Joseph Beuys to the American Pop Art collection Karl Ströhers. Thanks to the latter, then created contacts with well-known German and American artists - to Beuys and Warhol to Rauschenberg, Oldenburg, Lichtenstein and Segal, to Stella, de Maria, Flavin, Baselitz, Palermo, Polke, Richter and Walther.

In the spring of 1971 Götz Adriani followed a by Georg Karl Pfahler reputation as the founding director of the Kunsthalle Tübingen, a foundation of Paula Zundel and Margarete Fischer- Bosch, the daughters of Robert Bosch, in memory of the painter Georg Friedrich Zundel. With presentations by artists of the classical modern and contemporary art, whose works had not yet been shown in German-speaking or had barely enforced as artistic positions, Adriani succeeded to realize exhibition programs beyond the region, even international standing in Tübingen. Under his leadership, the Kunsthalle, especially in the first decade of its existence, a prominent experience and the reflection point of the contemporary art scene, and a frequented meeting point of the avant-garde. As for the response from the public, the exhibitions of the university town could have even in international comparison attendance records. So visitor numbers were achieved in the 1980s and 90s, which went well over two hundred, even three hundred thousand. A particular success yielded 1993 97 exhibits comprehensive selection of paintings by Cézanne, which is counted among the largest and most important shows of work by the artist. About 430,000 visitors during the 15 week run in the art hall and 250,000 catalog books were sold - a catalog circulation, which is unique in the world today. 1996 achieved the 104 paintings of Renoir first exhibition in the German speaking again about 420,000 visitors. Because of the profits generated by the Kunsthalle surpluses as well as a grant of Georg Zundel, the son of the founder, put together his collection of works on paper from the 1960s and 70s Götz Adriani, the municipal facility in the summer of 2003, was transformed into a foundation under civil law. This financial support for the continued existence of the house could be secured.

Attempts renowned museums, poach Adriani, did not fail, however, were in vain. Although the direction of the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Stuttgart State Gallery, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the art collection of North Rhine -Westphalia in Dusseldorf, the newly created post of Director General of the museums in Frankfurt and, not least, the Directorate General of the Bavarian State Painting Collections he was offered in Munich, he remained the Kunsthalle, for whose reputation he had made, and joined his few employees. Besides his work in Tübingen, he was active but also to other institutions. He was three times German commissioner of the Biennale in São Paulo, and for a long time he is both the board of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations in Stuttgart, as well as the Board of Trustees of the Cultural Foundation of ZF Friedrichshafen active. Appointed Honorary Professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe in 1985, Götz Adriani was in the years 1999 to 2004, as founding director of the Museum of Contemporary Art at ZKM in Karlsruhe, where he in addition to the development and expansion of the so-called collector's museum in a total of 16 exhibition projects - about Bruce Nauman, Franz West, Tobias Rehberger, and Martin Kippenberger - has initiated and implemented. From 1994 to 1999 he advised the Art Advisory Committee of the Bundestag regarding the equipment of the Reichstag building in Berlin with works of art, and finally he supported since 2001 Frieder Burda in the establishment, operation and program design of his museum in Baden -Baden. As a member of the Board of Frieder Burda Foundation, Adriani organized for the museum among other things, extensive exhibitions on Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz.

For his cultural commitment Adriani has received numerous prizes and awards, including the price of Theo Wormland Foundation in Munich. In the same year he was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques. In the late 1990s Adriani received the Foundation Award of the Württemberg mortgage bank of Arts and Sciences and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He received the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden -Württemberg, the Order of the French Legion of Honour, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and an honorary citizen of the university town of Tübingen.

2005 Götz Adriani withdrew from the operating business of the Kunsthalle Tübingen, for now draw Gerlinde Engelhardt, the Commercial Director of the house, and Daniel J. Schreiber responsible as managing curator. With a two-part anniversary exhibition, Kunsthalle committed 2011/2012 its 40th anniversary and remembered so on Adrianis exhibition initiatives that were formative for them and made ​​them so successful.
