Götz Spielmann

Götz Spielmann ( born June 11, 1961 in Wels, Austria ) is an Austrian film director and screenwriter. He is one of the most important contemporary Austrian auteur directors.

Life and work

Götz Spielmann was born in Wels and grew up in Vienna. He attended high school Wasagasse in the ninth district of Vienna. Already in the school, he began to write screenplays and stage short films. First time in 1978 was shown of him on television a short film he had realized in a school project. After graduating Spielmann went to Paris for a few months. After returning in 1980, he began studying at the Vienna Film Academy in the subjects of writing and directing under Harald Zusanek and Axel Corti. He graduated in 1987 with the thesis Forget Sneider! from, for in 1988 he was awarded the Special Prize of the Max Ophüls Festival.

His feature film debut as a director in 1990 graduated minstrel of the drama Erwin and Julia with Heinz Weixelbraun and Julia Stemberger in the lead roles. In 1993 he won for his film The neighbor the Vienna Film Prize at the Viennale.

The films The Brave One (2000) and Antares (2004) were Austria's submissions Best for an Oscar nomination in the foreign language film category. Antares ran to more than thirty international festivals.

In 2006 he founded together with Sandra Bohle his own film production company, which Spielmannfilm. In the same year Spielmann began to work for the theater. On January 5, 2007 witnessed the empire, his first play premiered in Linz Kammerspielen of the State Theatre Linz.

2008 Spielmann presented the unconventional revenge drama, which premiered at the Berlinale 2008 and was awarded the Art Cinema Award and the Label Europa Cinemas. In film reviews, the film is often referred to as game 's best ever performance director and considered one of the best films shown at the Berlinale. In the same year the movie official Austrian contribution to a nomination for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards in 2009 selected.

On 22 January 2009 it was announced that rematch next class, The Baader Meinhof Complex, Departures and Waltz with Bashir was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for best foreign language film.

On 11 February 2010 minstrel had play Empire with Peter Simonischek in the role of the brothel owner Wessely at the Schauspielhaus Graz premiere. Directed by Spielmann itself

Spielmann is married and lives with his wife and daughter in Vienna. By 2010 he was a board member of the Association of Film Directing Austria.
