Governors' Cup

The Governors' Cup is the Cup of the International League, one of the two leagues in the Triple -A minor leagues of Major League Baseball.

History

In 1933, a new playoff system was developed by Frank Shaughnessy, the former general manager of the Montreal Royals, ( named after him Shaughnessy playoff system ) introduced in the International League and with it the Governors' Cup. From 1936 to 1960 Shaughnessy President of the International League. With its new playoff system he wanted to allow more than two teams to play in the playoffs. This system has also been adopted in other sports, such as in the NHL.

The trophy for the winner of the International League was sponsored by the governors of the states of Maryland, New Jersey and New York and the vice governors of the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario, hence the name Governors' Cup.

1988, the trophy by former league president Harold Cooper was donated to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

(x ) - the playoffs were canceled after the first game on September 12, 2001. Louisville won the game 2-1, and on September 10 was set as the winner of the Series.

The end of the playoffs

The playoffs consist of two best-of -five games. These are held by the three winners of each division and a wild card winner. In this case, the winner of the North Division play against the wildcard winner and the South Division champion against the West Division champion. The winners then play in the Governors ' Cup Championship Series to the Governors' Cup.
